The Hedgerow Pharmacy is Opening

Late August · Late August

As the days begin to shorten, the hedgerows shift from summer flowers to autumn medicines. Elderberries are hanging in heavy purple clusters, rosehips are glowing like little lanterns, and nettle seeds are ready for gathering. This is the moment I begin preparing for the colder months, stocking the apothecary with immune support, soothing salves and restorative tinctures.

Elderberry

Elderberry is one of the first herbs I reach for as the season changes. Traditionally used to support immune health and seasonal wellness, I gather the berries once they are fully ripe and dark. I use them in syrups, tinctures and our immune-supporting blends. The berries are rich in beneficial plant compounds and have long been valued for respiratory comfort during the colder months.

Rosehip

Rosehips are starting to colour up now. I leave them a little longer to soften after the first frost, but I am already watching my favourite bushes. Traditionally used for immunity, joint comfort and skin vitality, rosehips are one of the most vitamin-rich wild fruits we have. They are a beautiful addition to autumn blends and a wonderful ally for anyone wanting to keep moving comfortably through winter.

Nettle Seed

Nettle seed is still on my mind. The female plants are heavy with drooping seed clusters right now, and I am gathering them daily. This little seed is a traditional restorative tonic, valued for supporting vitality, stamina and recovery. It is one of the herbs I love most for helping people feel grounded and resilient as the seasons turn.

Calendula

Calendula keeps flowering if I keep picking. I gather the flower heads for infused oils and salves, because the colder months always bring requests for dry, irritated skin support. Traditionally used to soothe and comfort the skin, calendula is a staple in my apothecary all year round.

A Good Time to Cleanse

Autumn is a traditional time for cleansing and supporting the body's natural elimination pathways. Many people feel drawn to a gentle reset after the summer, before the busy winter months. I often recommend beginning with a simple parasite and heavy metal detox bundle, supported by the right herbs and binders, to help the body transition smoothly into the new season.
